The Liebermann Villa, the estate of the German impressionist Max Liebermann, is one of the most important cultural sites in Wannsee and is within walking distance of the International Montessori School Berlin.

The fifth and sixth graders in the Aquamarine group were able to take part in an art workshop at the Liebermann Villa on 2 July as part of their art lessons. The workshop was led by Laureline van den Heuvel. In keeping with the current exhibition at the Liebermann Villa, the motto of the workshop was “Off to Italy!”. During a tour of the museum, the children were given an insight into Max Liebermann’s work and life. They talked to Ms van den Heuvel and exchanged ideas about techniques and colour concepts. Afterwards, the pupils were allowed to make their own collage in the café on the theme of holidays. Working as a team, they diligently crafted objects that they associate with summer holidays and put them together to create their own work of art.

The group really enjoyed expanding their knowledge of art history and following in Liebermann’s footsteps in their own creations.

Art education is very important in Montessori education. Exploring our own living spaces, acquiring cultural competence and going out in the form of excursions are also important in our pedagogy.
